This is a rough draft of my purpose statement and my research questions. I am sure I will be revising them soon.
Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this study is to determine how intense ABA style intervention with severely impaired students affects their cognitive understanding and functional use of AAC systems within a general education classroom.
Dependant Variables: Cognitive understanding of communicative acts for requesting objects. Functional use of AAC system to request objects within a general education classroom.
Independent Variable: Structured ABA style language intervention
Research Questions:
• What effect does intense ABA instruction have on cognitive understanding of AAC systems?
• How does ABA instruction affect a severely disabled student’s ability to functionally use AAC systems?
• Why do students with severe disabilities present with difficulties in their ability to functionally use AAC systems within general education classrooms?
• What are the internal factors that prevent students with severe disabilities from functionally utilizing AAC systems?
• What are the external factors that prevent students with severe disabilities from functionally utilizing AAC systems?
• How does ABA instruction overcome internal and external variables that hinder functional use of AAC systems in general education classrooms with severely disabled students?
Great job GFXS!! Your purpose statement looks great!! As do your research questions. Will you need to determine what the internal and external factors are BEFORE implementation? In other words, will the internal and external factors that are found be incorporated into the intervention? Or is this just additional information you are interested in? If the answer to the questions regarding internal and external factors will inform the intervention then I would put those questions first; otherwise, they are fine as is.

Do I identify them by stating them in question form?
Example:
How does limited attention span impact functional use of AAC systems?
How does sensory seeking behavior impact functional use of AAC systems?
I have several internal and external factors that I would like to explore. Would you advise that I identify the internal and external factors and then examine the affect ABA style intervention has on them?
I forgot to mention before that you have your IV and DVs reversed in your original post.
ReplyDeleteI recommend that you either try to find an existing survey or create your own to identify the factors. If you have an idea what the factors are, then you don't need to identify them ahead of time; you can simply measure the affect the intervention has on each one. This can be done easily with a Likert scale survey (either with level of agreement or a magnitude-type scale (not at all to very much affected) or something similar.
Thank you Dr. Reeves. I am looking for an appropriate scale that would help target the internal and external factors I am focusing on. A variation of the Conners scale could be effective. I am not familiar with a Likert scale survey so I will be sure to gather information on that.
